Ignacio,
I know that ADO supports disconnected recordsets, because I have worked with
it with other types of applications. I just wondered how I could connect a
ADO recordset (for example retrieved from a web request) to a Xailer dataset
and have all the benefits that comes with that. The problem is that there is
NO database connection.

Stephan

Stephan,
I suposse that even on a Web request there should be a connection. Please
send us a sample on any other language to see what we can do. BTW you can
always use ADO directly without the Datasource.

Ignacio,
the connection with the database is at the server site.
On the client site you can retrieve an ADO recordset.as follows:
oRS := CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
oRS:Open( http://www.synbiosys.alterra.nl/nl/getr ... p?sql=SELE CT *
FROM customer)
// SERVER site code could be something like..
cSQL := Request:QueryString["sql"]:Item(1)
oCon := CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
oCon:Open(<connectionstring>)
oRS := oCon:Execute(cSQL)
Response:ContentType := "multipart/mixt"
oRS:Save(Response, adPersistADTG)
oRS:Close()
/////
So on the client site a ADO recordset is received, and now I would like to
see it in a TSQLTable (in order to display it in TDBBrowse for further
processing).
Hope this clarifies.

Stephan,
Right now our ADO implementation always checks that a connection ( a
Datasource) exists. We may change that in the future but I am afraid it will
provoke important modifications.
I suggest, since you are just using a copy of the data, to retrieve the data
with CreateOleObject() and use its method GetRows to pass the array to a
TMemDataSet. I hope it helps.

I suggest, since you are just using a copy of the data, to retrieve the data
with CreateOleObject() and use its method GetRows to pass the array to a
TMemDataSet. I hope it helps.

TADODataSource
So you suggest to populate the TMemDataset from the ADO recordset and after
modification save the changes from the TMemDataset back to the ADO
recordset.
That's easy!
Thanks,

Stephan,

A friend asked for help to do the same as you but I never worked ADO that way.
The idea of Ignacio seems very good so, if you agree, you could send me
some working code when you have it and I could write a native Xailer
component. What do you think ?

I think that's a very good idea José. So with this component it will be easy
to retrieve (disconnected) recordsets from a webdatabase, and also send them
back to server.
Yes, I can provide code to retrieve from and send back to the server.
I'll provide the code tomorrow.

Stephan

José,
Sooner than I expected I have put together some code. There are two files,
one with code for the client and one for code on the (web)server. Each file
contains code for retrieving and saving ADO recordsets.
The code was initially written for UltimADE applications, which is a COM
based enviroment using clipper alike script. I also have Delphi clients
working with this kind of code. The code is not bullet prove, but I am sure
you can make it more save.
If you want I give you an internet address for retrieving data, but I prefer
to send the address to your private mail box.
Kind regards.
